Our Team

Daniel Stark

Dan is a partner of North by West Construction with over 18 years of experience in carpentry. He also brings with him a firm understanding of all the facets of construction including electrical, plumbing, masonry, tile setting, and roofing. He is experienced in managing multiple subcontractors on a job site by organizing schedules that allow for an unencumbered work environment. This allows him to create an atmosphere on site which minimizes stress and ensures work is completed in a safe, satisfactory, and timely manner.  He enjoys using both empirical and abstract methods to resolve any challenges that arise in the building process. This allows for a practical and imaginative way to get the results that a client should expect.  

Dan was born in and raised in the Upper West Side of New York City. He and his wife moved to the Bay Area in 2011.  Since then, they have planted their flag in Oakland where they have found a dog and started raising two children. Previous to fatherhood, he spent a great deal of his spare time crafting furniture using traditional joinery techniques. His goal in furniture making was to create attractive pieces without the use of power tools.

He now spends most of his free time exploring the cultural and natural bounty of the bay with his children.

Nathan Jones

Born in Los Angeles, California, Nathan is a native of the West Coast. As a young boy, his family bought a ranch in San Luis Obispo County. He spent his days playing with his brothers in the nature that surrounded them. Fishing, horses, bicycles, and later, skateboards were all in heavy rotation for entertainment.

As the son of a career electrician, his first job was an electrician’s apprentice. He spent his summers pulling wire and making up electrical boxes. Nathan has spent over 30 years in the construction industry perfecting his skills in framing, finish carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and tile setting. Later, he shifted focus to site and project management, and estimating. He founded North By West Construction with Daniel Stark, a former coworker, and now serves as a project manager and estimator.

In his off time you will find Nathan enjoying photography, hiking the Sierras, kayaking, or fishing.

Matthew Thompson

Originally from just outside Reading, Pennsylvania, Matt grew up in a country house catching frogs and digging for treasure. Matt rode the same hand painted, rocket red bicycle next to Amish buggies, pickup trucks, and executive limousines. His earliest jobs were laboring for uncles and neighbors in the trades. 

  After attending Alfred University for mixed media sculpture, his career has always moved back and forth between the arts and the building world. He's found a common thread in many disciplines, making clients happy by producing extraordinary objects and experiences throughout.  He's worked in over ten countries and he is credited on two Oscar nominated films.

Now happily back living in the Bay, Matt is focused on giving clients a pleasant and memorable experience by bringing projects to completion with a focus on the details and the experience. Matt brings with him excellent site management skills, as well as vast knowledge in both rough and finish carpentry.

In his personal time Matt enjoys painting, sculpting, and other creative arts.
