Oakland ADU

This Oakland residence began life as a single family dwelling. The lower level was a dirt floor basement. Completely unfinished with 6 feet of head room. The house was lifted 12”, excavated down another 24” to give a finished ceiling height of 8’6”. It is now a 2 bedroom, one bath ADU. Polished concrete floors and and a clean, linear design give this unit a modern feel. Upstairs, the original hardwood floors were bleached and refinished. The front facade was reconfigured and rebuilt to include an added reading nook to the living room. The rear of the house was redesigned to include a powder room, an interior staircase, and space for a stacked washer and dryer. Skylights on both sides of the roof pitch combine with large casement windows to provide lots of natural light. Original details such as inset cabinets and a built in Murphy bed were preserved in the upper unit.
